MLK PTO News | Open House Reminder! 6-7:30 pm TOMORROW, 9/17!

Dear MLK Families, Staff Members, and Friends,

We’re emailing to remind you that the MLK Elementary School Open House is TOMORROW, Thursday, September 17, from 6:00-7:30 pm Please note the time shift! Previous versions of this email shared that the Open House would start later, but that was incorrect. The Open House starts at 6:00pm. We apologize for any confusion.

During the Open House, you can visit your children’s classrooms, and meet their teachers and other parents. You can also sign up to share two hours of your time with the PTO this year! There is real power in our numbers. If each of us offers two hours for an upcoming event or activity, we will have an amazing year.

During the Open House, we will also be facilitating state Bureau of Criminal Identification checks, which are required for all school volunteers. We strongly urge you to complete a BCI check so that you can participate in activities in school per Rhode Island state law. This includes chaperoning field trips, assisting in classrooms, participating in PTO events that happen during the school day, and more. In order to do a BCI check, you will need to bring your driver’s license or some other form of valid photo ID and a check for $5 payable to “BCI.” We will collect applications on the spot and deliver them to the Rhode Island Attorney General’s office for processing. This allows you to skip a trip to the AG’s office, so come prepared! Thanks.

Also, for those family members who wish to be more involved with the PTO, please join tonight’s MLK PTO Executive Committee Organizing and Business Meeting from 7:00-8:00 pm in the MLK Elementary School Library.

See you soon!

Jill Davidson (MLK PTO President) on behalf of the MLK PTO

News for the Week of June 1-5, 2015

Now that June has arrived, we are in the home stretch for MLK events!  Here are some updates and reminders regarding the last few weeks of the school year:

PTO Leadership Needed for 2015-2016

The PTO is seeking nominations for the following positions for the coming school year, listed with their minimal duties.

President: leads PTO planning, represents the PTO at the district Parent Advisory Council (or designates another parent to do so)

Vice President: supports the PTO President

Treasurer: manages PTO finances

Secretary: takes notes at meetings

Without these key positions, the PTO cannot operate! So we really need a few brave souls to step forward. You may nominate yourself, or a friend. Please send nominations to us at mlkpto@gmail.com. Deadline for nominations is June 17, 5:00pm.

MLK Night of the Stars Talent Show Recap

We want to thank all of the children who so splendidly performed, the parents and Mt. Hope Learning Center staff members who volunteered to help, the Mt. Hope Learning Center junior step team, and the Best Students Ever hip hop group. Thanks also to Mrs. Lussier and Joanie for help throughout!

MLK’s Annual Field Day & BBQ will be held on Tuesday, June 9 for all grades.  Look for more information in backpacks soon!

The MLK Awards Ceremony will be held on Wednesday, June 17.  Parents will be notified ahead of time if their children will be receiving awards and are welcome to attend.  Kindergarten through 2nd grade will be awarded at 9:30 a.m., and grades 3-5 will have their ceremony at 2:00 p.m.

Final PTO meeting: June 17, 6:00-7:00pm

We will hold the last PTO meeting of the year on June 17. This meeting will be brief and will focus on selecting PTO leadership for next year. We will vote to choose the a new PTO President, Vice President, Treasurer, and Secretary. We are also seeking volunteers to coordinate activities and plan events for next year. Please attend if you can! A light dinner and childcare will be provided.

The Moving On Ceremony for 5th graders will be held on Thursday, June 18, at 2:00 p.m.  Look for more information to go home with students in the coming weeks.

When We Were King: MLK Elementary Reunion and Fundraiser for Mt. Hope Learning Center, Thursday, June 18, 6:00-8:00pm

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Elementary School and Mt. Hope Learning Center invite all MLK Elementary alumni and their families to a reunion. Come to King to visit the school, see old friends, meet current students and staff members, and celebrate the role of a wonderful neighborhood school that’s been serving Mt. Hope and the greater East Side for nearly 50 years. Current families and students are welcome as well! We suggest a $20 donation, which you can pay in advance at www.mlkpto.org or at the door. This fundraiser will celebrate the committed partnership between MLK Elementary and the Mt. Hope Learning Center. Proceeds will support Mt. Hope Learning Center afterschool programs, vacation/summer camps and more for King students. The evening’s events will include tours of the school, raffles, a performance from the Mt. Hope Step Team, great food, a special guest appearance by King celebrities (perhaps a Mr. Kane sighting!) and more.

There will be another MLK School Carnival held on Friday, June 19!  More information about this fun and popular event will go home in backpacks ahead of time.  Any questions about donations or volunteering should be directed to Lisa Jackson in the main office at 456-9398.

MLK End of Year Annual Appeal

As the year ends, the PTO seeks donations of any size to make sure that we’re ready for next year’s activities. The fall will be full of field trips, schoolwide events, and opportunities to make our school the best place possible for our kids to learn and thrive. The PTO provides essential financial support to King, and for that, we turn to you. Next week, your kids will bring home a form requesting a tax-deductible donation and a blue envelope. Please return whatever you can; you may make checks out to “MLK PTO” and we will accept cash. All envelopes will be kept under lock and key in the office to make sure your donations stay safe. Thank you in advance for your support – truly, every little bit counts!

Thanks for your participation in MLK events throughout the year!  We hope to see you at these final activities over the next few weeks!

Week of May 21, 2015

With a month left in the school year, we have a few events left on our calendar!  Here are some updates and important dates to remember:

TOMORROW, Thursday, May 21 is SPRING PICTURE DAY at MLK!  If you did not receive an order form and want your child’s photo taken, please stop by the office in the morning to pick up a form and make payment.

TOMORROW is also STEAM Night at MLK!  Stop by the cafeteria between 4:30 and 6:30 to see our students’ science fair projects on display.  Teachers will be grading/judging their work, and you can ask questions of our junior scientists!

Just a reminder: There will be NO SCHOOL on Monday, May 25, in observance of Memorial Day.

MLK Night of the Stars Talent Show! Thursday, May 28, 6:00-8:00pm, in the cafeteria

Don’t miss the MLK Night of the Stars Talent show to cheer on our students as they sing, dance, do gymnastics, and otherwise dazzle us with their talents! We will have pizza and drinks for sale at the Talent Show, so bring the whole family and make a night of it. If your children are in the show: they must arrive by 5:30. Thanks!

There will be a final PTO meeting held in June to elect officers and the board for next year’s PTO.  Date TBD; watch for more information soon!  If you would like to help plan next year’s activities or want to get involved with a specific project, please reply to this email indicating your interest.

Field Day will be held on Tuesday, June 9.  There will also be a special BBQ lunch served in school that day.  More information will be sent home regarding volunteering for this event.

June 17 (Wednesday) is the correct date for Awards Day (to be held during school hours).  Please check your calendar to make sure this date is entered correctly, as it may have changed slightly from a previous communication.  If your child will be receiving an award on this day, a note will go home beforehand to let you know.

June 18 (Thursday) will be the 5th Grade Moving On Ceremony.  Again, please check your calendar to make sure this date is entered correctly, as there may have been a slight change from a previous version of the calendar.  If you have a 5th grader, more information will be sent home regarding this event.

Also on Friday, May 8, there will be a Mothers’ Day-themed dance to celebrate moms, grandmothers, aunts, and other female role models!  It will be held at the school from 6:30-8:30 p.m.  Look for more information this week in backpacks.

BikeFest RI has all sorts of fun things planned for you to do on your bike!  This weekend bicycling enthusiasts from all over the state are coming to the MET School in Providence (325 Public Street) for this celebration of the cycling life, the only statewide bike festival —with a little whipped cream on top.  The day will begin Saturday, May 9, at 10:00 a.m. with a scavenger hunt around Providence, in which participants will cycle around the city, take photos of the items on the list and compete for prizes.  Then at noon, bike pie jousting is scheduled to commence.  Interested parties should sign up beforehand, and spots are limited to sixteen in a bracket competition.  Costumes are “highly encouraged” and the organizers say you should be prepared to get messy.  Bicycles and whipped cream pies will be supplied as part of the entry fee, which is $10 for adults and $7 for students.  (Proceeds will go to Women Bike Rhode Island.)  The winner of each bout will be determined by how much whipped cream is on a competitor’s face.  In the case of a tie, audience applause will determine the outcome.  “First and second place will take home the glory and prizes, TBA,” the organizers say.  Even if you’re not up for getting pie-d in the face, Bike Fest RI is a great opportunity to learn how to make some repairs and check out some new equipment, listen to music, and let your child jump up and down in a bouncy house.  It’s organized by the Met School, Recycle-A-Bike, Rhode Island Bicycle Coalition, FULLCYCLE @the MET, Bike Newport, Women Bike Rhode Island and Circuit BMX.  Anyone who would like more information can email Ed Raff at edward.raff@metmail.org.

May 12 PTO Meeting, 6:00-7:00pm King families, we want you to join us for May’s PTO meeting. We will be making plans for the PTO’s structure and activities for next year. If you have not been to a PTO meeting this year – or have not been to one recently – we really hope that you can come. We want to make the PTO more vibrant and accessible, and absolutely need your input on the ways we structure our work and make our activities and financial support for MLK happen. We PROMISE that you will be done by 7:00. Pizza and childcare will be provided.

If you are planning to participate in the PTO next year but cannot make the meeting, please email us at mlkpto@gmail.com or call PTO treasurer Jill Davidson at 401-345-2464. Following the May 12 meeting, we will send out additional information about ways to be involved. Thank you!

There will be a Chuck E. Cheese fundraiser held on Friday, May 15, at the Chuck E. Cheese in Attleboro.  MLK will receive 15% of all sales from our group that evening (including food and tokens.  All students will receive some free tokens and all staff will receive free meals.  Please come join in the fun while raising money for our school!

The Mount Hope Learning Center step team, including several recent MLK alums, won first place at the Rochester regional Break the Stage competition!  Providence, RI came to represent!  Next stop is Atlanta on June 13th where they will compete for a national title!

We hope to see you at some of these great King events.  Have a wonderful week!

News for the Week of April 13-17, 2015

There will be a PTO meeting THIS TUESDAY, April 14, from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. in the MLK library.  We will be discussing spring activities as well as plans for next year.  We have a full agenda including a special guest, Eagle Scout Zeke Cohen.  Zeke is a Classical High School 10th grader and former MLK Elementary student who is devoting his Eagle Scout project to improving the MLK School and Community Garden.  Please come to learn more about the garden and about Zeke’s project!  We will also be discussing other topics, including plans for future MLK building improvements and how parents and community members can help with upcoming events (Talent Show, Teacher Appreciation Lunch, Field Day, Chuck E. Cheese fundraiser, Moving Up Ceremony, and more).  PTO meeting attendance has been low this year.  We understand that everyone is busy!  But we also want to keep a strong, committed parent and family community at King, which is part of what makes our school special.  Please attend if you can.  Thanks!

School assignments for students in grades K, 6, and 9 have been completed!  To check your child’s assignment, you can follow the link below and enter your child’s Student ID number and date of birth, then click on Get The Student Info.  All student assignments will be posted on Monday, April 13 at the Student Registration Center (325 Ocean Street). Staff will be able to assist you in locating your student ID. You may also call Student Registration at 456-9297 between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.  A letter will be sent by postal mail with your child’s assignment and ID number, which should arrive by Friday, April 17.

There will be a school tour for incoming and prospective families on Friday, May 8, at 9:30 a.m.  Please note that this will be the last tour of the school year.  If you know a family whose child has been assigned to King, or a family potentially interested in King, please ask them to e-mail us at MLKPTO@gmail.com and indicate interest so we will know how many people to expect on the 8th.

The TALENT SHOW and TALENT SHOW REHEARSALS have been RESCHEDULED!

Thanks to all of the families who signed their children up for the MLK Night of the Stars Talent Show! Because we have many kids participating, holding Friday afternoon rehearsals will not work due to limited staff and space at that time. Therefore, Friday afternoon rehearsals on April 17 and May 1 will not take place. Please make sure your kids go home on the bus, walk home, are picked up, or go to their afterschool programs when school is dismissed at 2:10 on these two Fridays

The MLK STEAM Night (formerly the Science Fair) has been scheduled for May 21.  Please watch for more information about guidelines and due dates to go home with your child(ren) over the next few weeks.

Also, a reminder that NEXT WEEK, April 20-24, is spring vacation and there will be NO SCHOOL!  We hope you will get out and enjoy the much nicer weather!
