MLK Scholastic Book Fair: Big Success!
Many thanks to EVERYONE in the MLK Elementary School community for a hugely successful book fair! We donate all profits from the Book Fair to the MLK school library, which allows us to add hundreds of new titles per year to the collection. This is the main source for new library books. We are grateful to our students who showed us that they love to read! We also appreciate families for providing financial support to encourage your kids’ love of reading, teachers who found time to bring their classes to the book fair, the MLK administration and staff for endless support, and especially the many rock star parent and family volunteers who made the book fair happen! Finally, a big thanks to the many families and staff members who contributed gently used books. All children were able to go home with at least one book of their choice. Thanks to all!

Thanksgiving Food Donations – Mission Accomplished!
As usual, our community came together generously to support families in need. The school used students’ food contributions and Stop and Shop gift cards donated by the PTO to create 12 Thanksgiving food baskets that have been donated to make sure that all families can have a happy and delicious Thanksgiving. This was a great team effort!

Clothing Donations Needed
From time to time, kids need to change their clothes at school, and nurse Rhoda O’Keefe maintains a supply of clothing in various sizes for boys and girls. We are seeking donations to make sure there’s enough, so as you’re gathering up books to donate, and food to donate, thank you for continuing your generosity with clothing that your family can spare. You can send clothing for donations into school with your children.

Providence Public Schools Climate and Culture Survey
Students have received copies of a climate and culture survey that the Providence Public Schools is conducting. Your input is very important. Please fill out the survey on paper or online before December 4.

All the best and happy thanksgiving!

Thanks so much to the many volunteers that have offered to contribute items to the bake sale and help during the event. You are all fabulous!

If you’re contributing baked goods to the bake sale at the Harvest Festival tomorrow, here are some guidelines:
* Please share items that can be sold by the piece. We usually don’t sell whole items like an entire cake or pie
* If you can, please write up the ingredients so that anyone with food allergies or aversions can be aware
* No peanuts or tree nuts, which are the most common items that people need to avoid

You can drop off your items anytime during the day at the MLK office, in the afternoon in the cafeteria, or just bring them with you to the Harvest Festival. Thanks!!!

A final note from MLK staff member Francis Gomez: We are asking for new or gently worn clean winter attire for children. These donations will benefit children in local shelters. There will be a donation bin at the Harvest Festival. If you are unable to make it to the Harvest Festival to donate, there will be a collection drive on November 8, 2015 at 2pm at the Scalabrini Dukcevich Center, 300 Laurel Hill Ave. in Providence. Thank you!

Most Likely to Succeed Screening | Thursday, October 8, 4:30pm
We know what our schools look like today, but what do we want our schools to look like 5, 10, or 20 years from now? How can we make sure our schools are preparing students to succeed in the changing world and the challenging careers of the 21st century? To get this conversation rolling, the Rhode Island Department of Education invites you to join with other friends of education for a free screening of Most Likely to Succeed, a new documentary film on entrepreneurship, innovation, and public schools: . Following the screening, join Ted Dintersmith, co-author of the book Most Likely to Succeed: Preparing our Kids for the Innovation Era and Rhode Island Commissioner of Education Ken Wagner for a discussion and reflection on where our schools should be heading – and how we can help them get there.

The screening will take place on Thursday, October 8 at 4:30 pm at the Providence Career and Technical Academy, 41 Fricker Street. To register, go to: http://events.constantcontact.com/register/event?llr=vh4bchmab&oeidk=a07ebiy2hly7de4512f. Seating is limited; register today!
