MLK PTO Meeting Tuesday, March 15, 6:00 pm – Ice Cream Social postponed, but we are still meeting
The PTO will be meeting tomorrow at 6:00 pm in the library. We are postponing the planned ice cream social until spring really gets going and we can enjoy fabulous weather. Instead, this PTO meeting is for planning for the remainder of this year and next to discuss the best ways that the PTO can partner with the school staff and our parent community. If you have ideas and suggestions, even if you have never been to a PTO meeting, we warmly welcome you to join us for this discussion that will result in action items that will add value to your children’s experience at MLK. Children are welcome to accompany you, and we will have light snacks and beverages. Thanks!

Pennies for Patients
Through March 24, MLK Elementary is participating in the Pennies for Patients fundraising effort to support the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) Student Series campaign. Your support will help fund therapies and treatments that help save the lives of blood cancer patients today. MLK Elementary has participated in the Pennies for Patients program for many years, and has always contributed generously, thanks to your support. Our school’s goal is $2,500.

Earlier this month, students brought home boxes to collect donations, and we thank all families that have already sent back contributions. You can also give online:

MLK Elementary’s school nurse Rhonda O’Keefe also needs assistance. She is seeking volunteers available in the late morning to help count funds in the late morning, or to bring coins to the Coinstar machine (this can be done anytime during the day).

Thank you for your assistance and support!

Kindergarten registration ends today!
If you or someone you know is enrolling an incoming kindergartener in the Providence Public Schools, the registration deadline is TODAY! Please visit for more information.

Rhode Island recess legislation introduced: support from families needed!
We’re sharing information from the Parents Across Rhode Island advocacy group about recess legislation that state representative Kathy Fogarty has introduced House Bill H7644, which would require at least 20 minutes of recess daily for all children in grades K-5 in Rhode Island. Here’s more information from Parents Across Rhode Island on the importance of recess for student learning and development, and here’s an article from today’s Providence Journal about the progress of this legislation.

You can help this bill pass by emailing House Health Education and Welfare Committee Chairman Joseph McNamara with your thoughts on the proposed legislation. Emails should be addressed to  You can also help this bill pass by writing to your Rhode Island state senator and representative and asking them to support this bill. Click here to figure out who your legislators are and how to get in touch with them.

Please do this soon to show your support for recess for all Rhode Island kids. Feel free to share your personal experience with recess for your children. It’s important that the committee understand the issue and hearing from parents and students is the best way to ensure that happens.

All the best for a great week,

Jill Davidson (MLK PTO President) on behalf of the MLK PTO
