News for the Week of December 8-12, 2014

The MLK Scholastic Book Fair was a great success!  We earned approximately $2000 worth of books for our library and classrooms!  All children who visited the fair received a free book from our gently-used donations, and many of them also purchased new books with money from home.  Thank you to all who shopped, and especially to the parents and students who volunteered their time to help us achieve our goals.  We very much appreciate our volunteers at MLK!

Tomorrow night, Tuesday, December 9th, there will be a PTO Parent Workshop on the new PARCC testing from 6-7 p.m.  This standardized test replaces the old NECAP test and assesses students’ academic progress.  Come learn what PARCC stands for, how it is administered, what the scores mean, and how the information is used by teachers and administrators in Providence Schools.

Craftland is generously donating 10% of its proceeds on Thursday, 12/11 to support several local schools, including King!  We’ll use this donation to support this year’s mosaic, led as always by artist-in-residence Jess Regelson.  MLK families, please join the event, invite people, share this, and get yourself to Craftland on Thursday to buy local while doing good!  Craftland is located at 212 Westminster Street in Providence, and will be open later than usual, until 8 p.m., for this event.

There will be a tour of King for prospective families THIS FRIDAY, December 12, at 9:30 a.m.  Interested parents should report to the office at 9:15 to check in and receive a visitor pass.  Please invite any parents you may know with incoming Kindergarten students.  The tour is also open to parents with younger children who want to learn more about King for the future.  If you have any questions about the tour, please call Kristina at 632-7056.

The MLK Holiday Bazaar is right around the corner!  It is happening THIS SATURDAY, December 13th, from 11-3.  Look for flyers to go home in backpacks this week.

PPSD will be having a middle and high school fair on December 13 from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.  Representatives from the district’s middle and high schools will be on hand to answer questions that parents/guardians may have as they prepare to register their students for the 2015/2016 school year. The fair will take place at Juanita Sanchez High School.

Announcing our third annual Healthy Living Fair at MLK on Saturday, January 10th from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Come enjoy healthy food, Zumba exercise class, MrDeep Positivity, free holistic healthcare, the inflatable obstacle course, and more! If you would like to volunteer for the event, please contact Karlo Berger directly, or reply to this e-mail.

Just a friendly reminder: please do not block traffic during afternoon pick-up on Camp Street.  When cars block the flow of traffic, it results in gridlock at the intersection of Camp and Doyle.  Please park your car and walk to pick up your children so the flow of traffic is not disrupted.  Thank you for keeping pick-up smooth and safe for all families.

**NOTE: the Parents’ Night Out that was originally scheduled for last Friday, December 5th, will be rescheduled after the holidays.  Keep an eye out for a flyer to be sent home in January!

If you know of any MLK families who do not receive this e-mail blast and may be interested, please ask them to e-mail mlkpto@gmail.com to be added to our list.  If you would like to be removed from the mailing list, please reply to this message with the word UNSUBSCRIBE in the subject line.

Thank you, and have a great week!
