1. THANK YOU – Annual Teacher Appreciation Luncheon
Thank you to all the parents who supported the annual Teacher Appreciation Luncheon on Friday, May 10, 2013. Parent volunteers transformed our Teacher’s Lounge for this annual event to say thank you to our dedicated and committed faculty at the King School.

Thank you to Helen Dukes and all the volunteers for the spectacular 2nd and 3rd grade talent show on Thursday, May 16, 2013. The spring extravaganza of King School talent continues in June featuring our fourth and fifth graders! Please plan to come out for this wonderful event!

The King School has a wonderful organic school and community garden on the campus. The garden is a wonderful learning tool for classes who will use the garden in support of the school curriculum. COMMUNITY UPDATE FOR THE WEEK OF MAY 6, 2013
1. MLK PTO APRIL MONTHLY MEETING RECAP
The April monthly meeting for the MLK PTO was held on Thursday, April 25, 2013 at 6:00pm in the Anna L. Rogers Library at the King School. The meeting began with Assistant Principal Lussier updating parents, teachers, and community partners on the renovation activity in the library and recent technology upgrades at the school available to students and teachers. Principal Ciesla informed the group about new activities and events at the school, including a new King School store where students, parents, alumni, and friends can purchase King School paraphernalia such as T-shirts, umbrellas, jackets, and much more. The group also discussed volunteers for the MLK PTO leadership team for the next school year as well as upcoming programs and events for the spring. The need for new fibrous mulch for the playground was discussed as well as other needed updates for the campus and building including a much needed and long overdue renovation of the Parent Engagement Room. The date for the May meeting will be announced soon, so please plan to come out for this important and fun meeting. Remember, a great MLK needs a great PTO!
2. TEACHER APPRECIATION WEEK BREAKFASTS ~ Week of May 6, 2013
This year, the PPSD and the Office of the Mayor are partnering to host breakfast in every Teachers Lounge of our school buildings honoring our teachers during Teacher Appreciation Week – week of May 6. We need your help! In order to make sure teachers arrive to school with breakfast and coffee ready and available before they start their day we are searching for volunteers to help with making sure the event runs smoothly. If you are able to volunteer from 7:00am-9:00am, please contact Janet Pichardo at janet.pichardo@ppsd.org.
3. ANNUAL MLK TEACHER APPRECIATION LUNCHEON ~ Friday, May 10, 2013
The annual MLK PTO Teacher Appreciation Luncheon will be held on Friday, May 10, 2013 beginning at 11:00am in the King School Teacher’s Lounge. If you would like to volunteer for this event, please contact Corey Walker at cdbwalker@brown.edu. Families and friends are encouraged to share their favorite luncheon dish for our wonderful teachers at King!

A BIG thank you to all the parents, teachers, and friends who came out to support the MLK 2013 Spring Fundraiser at Pizzico Ristorante on the evening of May 2, 2013. A committed group of King School supporters braved Hope Street construction to support the students and academic program at King. Thank you to our community partners at Pizzico Ristorante who are stalwart supports of the King School and to MLK parent Kim Rohm for organizing this event. All proceeds will benefit the renovation of the Anna L. Rogers Library at the King School.

COMMUNITY UPDATE FOR THE WEEK OF APRIL 22, 2013
1. READING WEEK AT MLK ~ April 22-26, 2013
This week is Reading Week at the King School! The entire week of April 22-26, 2013 will feature a series of events and programs to highlight the joys of reading. The events include: Monday, April 22, 2013: All school assembly to kick-off reading week; Tuesday, April 23, 2013 ”Hats Off to Reading”: Wednesday, April 24, 2013: ”Pick a Story – Make a Movie”; Thursday, April 25, 2013: “Dress as Your Favorite Book Character Day”; and Friday, April 26, 2013: ”Poetry from Our Roots.”

3. ANNUAL EARTH DAY CLEANUP AT MLK ~ Saturday, April 27, 2013
The Annual Earth Day Clean-Up at MLK is scheduled for Saturday, April 27, 2013 from 9:00am-1:00pm (Raindate is Sunday, April 28, 2013 from 9:00am-1:00pm). Healthy snacks will be provided by Whole Foods. Please bring water, gloves, plus any tools and refuse bags you can share! In addition to the annual grounds clean-up, this year we’re hoping to also add some bright colors to the MLK grounds by painting the benches at the front playground and the picnic table into the Community Garden. 1. APRIL IS READING MONTH AT THE KING SCHOOL
April is reading month at the King School! We will highlight reading month during the wek of April 22-26, 2013 with a series of events and programs to highlight the joys of reading. COMMUNITY UPDATE FOR THE WEEK OF MARCH 25, 2013
1. MARCH MLK PTO MEETING HIGHLIGHTS
With the weather getting warmer and the days longer, an intimate group of around twenty parents, teachers, and administrators met in the King School cafeteria to discuss a number of important issues and programs. The Family Dance and K-1 Talent Show went over great with King School parents and families. A new American flag is now flying high atop the flag pole in front of the school. The King School fish tank will be revitalized with a new design and a sustainable maintenance program. Twenty-six new computers were installed and connected in the Anna L. Rogers Library and four new mobile smart boards are up and running at the school. A new behavior policy is in place designed to minimize out of school days for students and provide reinforcement of the academic program and expectations of good student behavior. The Anna L. Rogers Library renewal project was discussed and progress is currently underway in making the library the jewel of the King School. Principal Ciesla and Assistant Principal Lussier went over the NECAP report and offered guidance on interpreting individual student performance. The April MLK PTO meeting will highlight new technology available at the King School and student learning technology available to parents and families.

1. MARCH MLK PTO MEETING ~ Wednesday, March 13, 2013 at 6:00pm
With the weather getting warmer and the days longer, it is time to gear up for a great spring at MLK! Come out to the March MLK PTO meeting to learn about the exciting events planned for the upcoming weeks including the Annual MLK Earth Day Clean Up, Spring Talent Showcases, Parents and Teachers Night Out Fundraiser, Annual Field Day, Annual Teacher Appreciation day and much, much more. We will also learn about the recent NECAP reports from Principal Ciesla and Assistant Principal Lussier along with an important update on the King School technology initiative. 2. MLK PTO AWARDS $5,000 GRANT FOR BEAUTIFICATION OF THE ANNA L. ROGERS LIBRARY AT THE KING SCHOOL
The MLK PTO recently awarded a $5,000 grant to support the beautification of the Anna L. Rogers Library at the King School. The beautification effort entails new carpeting, desks, interior design and more. The grant will be matched with other funds and additional fundraising by the MLK PTO to fully renew and revitalize the King School library.
3. CHINESE LANGUAGE AND CULTURE PROGRAM
The Chinese Language and Culture program began on Wednesday, March 6, 2013. The program will last six weeks and is open to first and second graders only. The registration fee is $25.00 and can be made payable to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Elementary School. There are only ten slots available on a first come first serve basis. 1. 2013 MLK VALENTINE’S FAMILY DANCE ~ Friday, February 15, 2013 at 6:30pm
All King School students are invited to the 2013 MLK Valentine’s Family Dance on Friday, February 15, 2013 beginning at 6:30pm in the King School cafeteria. Currently enrolled King School students, parents/guardians, and siblings under the age of 13 are invited to this exciting event. Students must be accompanied by a parent or guardian over 18 who will attend for the duration of the event. Tickets are available for $1.00 for children grades K-5 and $2.00 for adults. For families of five or more, tickets are $5.00. All tickets must be purchased prior to the event as no tickets will be available at the door. Please make sure you send in your ticket order form and money by Thursday, February 14, 2013 to your child’s teacher. So plan to come out to this exciting and fun filled event!

COMMUNITY UPDATE FOR THE WEEK OF FEBRUARY 4, 2013
1. JANUARY MLK PTO MEETING RECAP
Over forty parents and teachers along with a number of students and community partners attended the January MLK PTO meeting on Wednesday, January 30, 2013. The meeting took place during the very well organized MLK Healthy Living Fair headed up by Assistant Principal Lussier along with King School Community partners at the Mt. Hope Learning Center and the YMCA. The meeting highlighted the need to dramatically improve the technology infrastructure at King to support curricular enhancements, student learning, and faculty and staff professional development. The meeting also discussed ongoing standardized testing, school safety policies and procedures, and new programs for the King School community. The Open Windows Initiative: Creating Possibilities for Student Success will take up the issue of improving the technology infrastructure of the King School to adequately support student learning, faculty and staff professional development, and implementation and support of the curriculum. Information about this undertaking will be communicated in a separate e-mail addressed to the entire King School community. Overall, this very well attended January meeting was a great start for what promises to be great 2013 at King!

COMMUNITY UPDATE FOR THE WEEK OF JANUARY 21, 2013
1. JANUARY MLK PTO MEETING RESCHEDULED ~ Wednesday, January 30, 2013 6:00pm-7:15pm
Celebrate the New Year at the January MLK PTO meeting scheduled for Wednesday, January 30, 2013 beginning at 6:00pm in the King School cafeteria. We will discuss upcoming PTO events and activities along with hearing from Principal Ciesla and Assistant Principal Lussier on the academic program at King. We will also follow through on our “Open Windows Initiative: Creating Possibilities for Student Success” by developing an action agenda for the King School community in an effort to bring educational justice to Providence and setting specific goals and timetables in support of making the King School the best possible. So please plan to come out for this important meeting.
2. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR UPCOMING MLK PTO EVENTS
The MLK PTO needs YOU more than ever! A number of activities and events require the energy and collective excitement of the entire MLK community, including:
- MLK Healthy Living Night scheduled for Wednesday, January, 30, 2013 at 6pm;
- MLK Family Dance scheduled for Friday, February 15, 2013;
- MLK Talent Shows beginning on the evening of Thursday, February, 28, 2013 and continuing in March, April, and June;
- Literacy and Math Night in April;
- Parents and Teachers Night Out in April;
- National Teacher Appreciation Day in May;
- Annual Science Fair in June;
- Annual Field Day in June;
- Honors Night and Fifth Grade Ceremony in June; and
- Monthly MLK PTO meetings in February, March, April, May, and June

3. PPSD SCHOOL REGISTRATION NIGHT AT THE KING SCHOOL ~ Tuesday, January 22, 2013
Providence Public Schools registration for kindergarten has started and information on when, where, and how to register is available at http://www.providenceschools.org/inside-ppsd/registration. A registration workshop is planned for Tuesday, January 22, 2012 from 6:00pm-7:30pm at the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Elementary School at 35 Camp Street.

Learn about programs and initiatives at the Anna L. Rogers Library at the King School as well as the latest in children’s literature from King School librarian Patrick Tierney’s blog available at http://www.mrtierneyslibrary.com/

The PTO is always in need of volunteers! 7. BOX TOPS FOR EDUCATION & EAST SIDE MARKETPLACE RECEIPTS
Earn cash for MLK by clipping Box Tops from hundreds of your favorite products. Each Box Tops coupon is worth 10 cents for MLK, and that adds up fast! Send Box Tops to the office in an envelope marked PTO. This will translate into real money for enrichment for all kids at King! Also, if you shop at East Side Marketplace on Pitman Street, please save all receipts and send into school in an envelope marked PTO. We collect these receipts and receive a rebate. Every little bit really does count!

10. KING SCHOOL COMMUNITY NEWS ~ FREE HATS, MITTENS, AND COATS and ASTHMA EDUCATION PROGRAM
The Neighborhood Health Plan of Rhode Island, Lite Rock 105, St. James Baptist Church, Petro, and Coventry Credit Union will distribute free hats, mittens, and coats for kids on Thursday, January 24, 2013 from 10:00am-3:00pm at the Prairie Avenue Health Center located at 355 Prairie Avenue in Providence. Items will be distributed on a first come, first serve basis and if a child cannot be present, please bring proof of child’s name and age.
The Community Asthma Programs of Hasbro Children’s Hospital Providence Schools Asthma Partnership invites you and your children to an after school Asthma Educationa Program on Thursday, January 24, 2013 from 5:00pm-7:30pm at the Esek Hopkins Middle School located at 480 Charles Street in Providence. Transportation will be provided when needed along with babysitting,light dinner, and raffle for parents. Attendees will receive a Peak Flow Meter and an Aerochamber.
